The Story Behind the Give Back Games

What are the Give Back Games?

The Give Back Games” are a set of competitions held by various regional CrossFit affiliates to raise money for local causes. The Give Back Games were created by Bobby Tanner in September, 2015. After hosting multiple free local competitions, Bobby felt that it would be beneficial to the community and to local organizations to host the competitions and charge a small entry fee to be donated to local organizations/communities. Bobby said, “Our gym, CrossFit 157 has always participated in community involvement, so I thought it would be a good idea to charge a small fee for entry and help out local communities and organizations. We did, and the GiveBack Games were born. We have been to communities all over the state and even to North Carolina. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store!”

Why Do We Do It?

CrossFit 157, located within Extreme Fitness, in Florence, SC hosted the “Give Back Games” finale on January 9th to benefit Owen Plasman. 11 year old Owen is a very special member of the Crossfit 157 family, and also the entire community. He was diagnosed with metastatic osteosarcoma in January 2013 and has been fighting the disease ever since. He has relapsed twice, with the cancer spreading to his lung, in November 2014 and most recently, resulting in the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung.
Owen’s mother, Gillian Plasman, is a part of the CrossFit 157 family and has participated in several CrossFit competitions. Gillian says, “The members of Crossfit 157 have supported me in so many ways this past year; physically, mentally, emotionally, and now financially. The GiveBack Games finale brought 78 athletes (forming 34 teams) from Crossfit affiliates throughout the state. There were also athletes from these affiliates that volunteered their time by judging the competition. Many friends and family came to support their favorite athlete as they competed, showing Owen that no one fights alone. We would like to thank everyone who was involved, the day was super special, having Owen there all day watching so many who he admires and who inspire him, being able to announce the winners and stand on the podium with them is something he will always remember.
